legends-sahmeran
The snakes living
in the province of Tarsus in the Mediterranean Region were called Meran. These
serpents, living in peace, were intelligent and affectionate, and their queen
was called Shahmaran. The upper part of Shahmaran's body was a beautiful woman,
and the lower part of her body was shaped like a snake.
The first person to
see him, Cemşab, was the son of a poor family that sold wood. Cemşab wants to
extract honey from a cave with his friends, but his friends leave Cemşab in the
cave to get more honey. When Cemşab noticed a light leaking hole in the cave,
he enlarged this hole with his knife and saw a beautiful garden.
This garden has
unique flowers, a pool and many snakes. Cemşab, who has lived here for years,
gains the trust of Shahmaran, but misses his family and says that Shahmaran will let him go, provided that he
does not tell anyone about his place.
Cemşab does not
tell anyone about the location of Şahmeran until the sultan gets sick. When the
vizier tells that the sultan should eat the flesh of Shahmaran in order for the
sultan to recover, he shows Cemşab Şahmeran's location and, seeing that Cemşab
is actually sad, Shahmaran tells him to boil him and let the vizier drink his
meat and feed his meat to the sultan.
The vizier dies,
and the recovered sultan makes Cemşab his vizier. According to the legend, it
is rumored that the snakes, who do not know that Shahmaran was killed, will
invade Tarsus when they learn about it.
According to a rumor, Cemşab, who obtained a lot of information about
medical science from Şahmeran, is actually Lokman Hekim.
